Mississippi Bridge Wrought Iron Cross

This unique Friederich cross is hand-forged from genuine antique wrought iron salvaged from an old Mississippi bridge that was torn down. The iron is well over a century old and has been given new life as a meaningful piece of handcrafted art.

Unlike modern mild steel, genuine wrought iron contains fine strands of iron silicate slag running through the metal, giving it a distinctive fibrous, wood-like grain. Wrought iron was once widely used in bridges, buildings, and decorative ironwork, but commercial production largely disappeared as modern steel became cheaper and easier to manufacture. Today, authentic wrought iron is increasingly difficult to find and is often reclaimed from old structures.

The distinctive opening in this Friederich cross is created by carefully splitting and unfolding the iron using traditional blacksmithing techniques. The entire cross is forged from a single piece of material, with no iron added or removed.

They are offered in two patinas, light or dark grey and both highlight the beautiful natural grain of the antique wrought iron. Each one is unique, with subtle differences in texture and appearance.

Dimensions: Approximately 2-7/8" tall by 1-3/4" wide.

Includes a leather thong for hanging or display.
